A Business not a Puppy Mill
The dog breeder and the corner drug dealer are first cousins. Both chose a "business" that takes minimal effort. They're an equivalent neighborhood nuisance. Both do it for the love of easy money. Rarely either has a business license and reports income so they rarely if ever pay taxes. They lack any other skills in life and use a lopsided accounting system.
Call it what it is!
We have kennel systems for humans too, but we call them what they are: prisons. A dog kennel other than temporary holding is a prison for dogs. What differentiates them from human prisons is that no dog knows why they're imprisoned.
Animal hospitals have no choice in housing dogs in kennel systems during visits and temporary boarding. Dog Shelters utilize very large kennel systems due to the huge volume of neglected dogs that are no longer the puppies everyone wants.
Dog Beeder or Puppy Mill?
Is there really any difference? No! They are all imprisoning dogs for the purpose of making easy money. It really is that simple.
They are all contributing to the same problem of overcrowded shelters with the 1,300,000 dogs finding their way into shelter dog kennels every year. That is more than 3,560 dogs every single day, and the number is growing!
Of the 1.3 million dogs finding themselves in shelters each year because of human neglect and over-breeding, 670,000 are euthanized. That is more than 1,830 dogs killed every single day.
It's only in their own minds as they seek justification for their deeds and point the finger at someone else and say, "they're the puppy mill, not me!" The more these people boast of their great knowledge and skill, the more their red flag goes up! They know very little about anything, that's why they're breeding dogs!
Every dog breeder/puppy mill started the same way and for the same reason. It's as easy as selling drugs on the corner and no less a societal nuisance. Cage some dogs and breed them for easy money and see who can tell the best lies to justify it.
There you have it, and you can't separate it by calling one a dog breeder and the other a puppy mill. They are synonomous, one and the same no matter how you try to paint it. Imprisoning dogs for easy money.
Fancy, clean or dirty, inside or outside, covered or not, it's still just dog jail!
No Breeding Rights
You will notice this statement from many dog breeder/puppy mills. Sometimes they tell you up front, other times it's just noted on the registration papers. This is simply a strategy to keep puppy prices high by blocking others from getting into the business.
They will tell you lies and bogus reasons to justify it, often boasting that "they know best". If there were any legitimacy to their lies, and if they were trying to be at all responsible the dogs would be spayed or neutered. As it is these dogs can and will still breed, it's just that their offspring are blocked from registration. They're plenty eager to sell puppies that are perfectly capable of breeding.
It's all about controlling the $green$. You'll not find anyone with more lies and BS than dog breeder/puppy mills trying to glorify what they're doing!
Pedigree Value
A Pedigree does not a good dog make! A pedigree is a record of ancestory which if recorded properly will include traits good and bad. The whole purpose is to breed better dogs. However, very few dog breeder/puppy mills record bad traits; those traits that you would want to elliminate in future dogs. As a result the pedigree is worthless. Often, dog breeder/puppy mills continue to breed dogs with known problems or bad traits "because the pedigree is so good." No it isn't, it's been destroyed!
The pedigree, OFA, and Embark are all similar in that they are intended to improve the animals. The pedigree is very dependent on human honesty.
What is OFA?
OFA stands for Orthopedic Foundation for Animals. It is an effort to minimize the occurance of genetic diseases. Buying a dog with a certificate that it or it's parents have currently passed does not mean that your dog won't develop problems later. In fact, 1 in 4 puppies may still develop problems later in life. Know that with regard to dysplasia related certificates issued before the dog is 6 years old have quite minimal value since these problems don't typically manifest until the dog is 4 to 6 years old. The fact that someone is getting these tests does not mean that they are not a puppy mill! Know also that remarks on the certificate are not ratings.
What is Embark?
Embark is a brand of DNA testing for ancestry and trait potential in dogs. It in no way means that the dog being tested won't have, or develop bad traits. As with OFA, it is an effort to improve the knowledge base and traits in dogs. It does not guarantee anything.
Puppy once, Dog for life!
The puppy stage of a dogs life is very short. That cute puppy becomes the dog it will remain within six months. That dog will live from 7 to 12 years give-or-take a year or two mostly depending upon the breed.
Dogs dragging chains around a tree were that cute puppy once. Do you really think they have a good life now?
Those noisy kennel dogs
Happy dogs don't bark, they don't need to. On the other hand, imprisoned kennel dogs are frustrated animals that have no idea why they are, where they are. They're not "talking" because they're happy, that's more puppy mill lies.
A dog breeder/puppy mill operator will often say that dogs are their noisiest when they are happy. FALSE! Just like a human baby that cries when it wants or needs something, dogs will do exactly the same thing through barking or whining. In the case of a dog kennel where they are concentrated, they will all begin to participate in the message.
It is not uncommon for kennel dogs to remain quiet until they see a human approaching or in the vacinity. Dogs aren't stupid, they know that a human controls what they can and can't do while they're contained in these dog kennel prisons. They also know that the human is their only hope for attention whether it is simply petting or better yet a walk around the yard on a leash. Even while one dog may be receiving attention, the rest of the dogs will be noisy hoping that they might be so lucky as to be next in receiving what little attention they're likely to get for the day. This noisy situation has nothing to do with happiness. Quite the contrary, they're frustrated prisoners protesting and begging!
Veterinary Insults
Nothing screams "I'm running a puppy mill" more than postings like these!
Quite common postings on their web sites and social media, dog breeder/puppy mill operators actually know very little yet think they know it all. Making such posts is a puppy mill red flag.
These statements demonstrate that the "breeder" doesn't respect the Veterinary profession nor the centuries of knowledge they have studied and continue to study. Such postings are also a sign that the puppy mill operator is attempting to play doctor themselves without training or knowledge other than the "wives tale" idocracy they spread.
Dog Kennel
A dog kennel is needed for many reasons: a pet owner might need one to contain their pet when they need to go outside for bilogical needs. Maybe they own a dog that hasn't been trained well enough to remain indoors while they are away for the work day. A responsible pet owner won't simply turn their dog loose to run the neighborhood and mess the neighbors yard simply because they are to lazy to take the dog for a walk or contain it in their own yard.
A veterinarian needs a dog kennel to contain the several dogs that they may be treating and/or boarding at any given time. The typical animal hospital will have quite a large dog kennel.
Shelters have need for very large dog kennels due to the huge number of dogs they recieve every single day of the year, but especially after holidays when pets are given away like candy to people whom have no means to take care of them. These gift animals are then turned in to animal shelters often the very next day. Animals are not candy!
Then you have the puppy mill/dog breeders that imprison the numberous dogs they are breeding.
Domestic dogs make wonderful pets. A well cared for dog as a family pet wants only one thing: it wants to please it's human companion. That is when a dog is truely the happiest. To be a good dog, the dog needs a good human; it's a two way street. A good pet owner will never let the dog run free, but this does not mean the dog should spend it's life in a cage or on a chain. Many states have state-wide leash laws. This doesn't mean that all human owners abide: many simply don't. That is not the dogs fault, but the dog is the one that will get the blame for the negligent human owner.
